What is NKLA?

NKLA stands for “No Kill Los Angeles,” a program started in 2012 by BFAS. In the words of BFAS themselves from their website NKLA.org...

We are a coalition of animal welfare organizations, city shelters and passionate individuals. Led by Best Friends Animal Society, we're dedicated to ending the killing of healthy and treatable pets in L.A. city shelters. Our plan is straightforward. Provide spay/neuter services where they are needed most so fewer animals go into shelters, and increase adoptions through the combined efforts of the NKLA coalition so more animals come out of the shelters and go into new homes.  Best Friends is providing grants to coalition partners for every pet they adopt to a new home over the number they adopted last year, as well as funding spay/neuter projects for pet owners who can't afford to have their pets fixed. We’re making this happen because the animals deserve it. Standing united toward this singular goal, our mission will become reality.”

NKLA has already been an incredible success in its first year of existence alone with 4,200 fewer animals being killed in shelters because if their program! Additionally, the entire coalition behind NKLA completed 23,421 adoptions and 4,458 spay/neuter surgeries! To date there are 51 organizations and rescues that are members of the NKLA coalition and the number continues to grow and by 2017, the goal is to have ALL of Los Angeles be completely no kill.
